The Apparatus · Small Barrel
★ First Session Free
The spine corrector. Smaller, lower and far gentler than the High Barrel, and the piece I use when a body needs the same work in a shape it can actually accept.
What It Actually Is
A small padded barrel that sits on the floor, often called the spine corrector or the arc barrel. You lie over it, under it or alongside it, and it gives the spine a curve to work around without lifting you off the ground.
Its usefulness is in its proportion. The High Barrel asks for a lot of range. The small barrel asks for a little, with the floor still underneath you and nothing to climb onto or balance on.
That makes it one of the most quietly valuable pieces in the studio, and the one clients are most often surprised by.
What It Is Good For
Rolling over the curve one vertebra at a time, with the barrel giving feedback about which part of your back is skipping.
Supported overhead and arm work where the barrel holds your upper back, so the shoulder can move without the neck helping.
The curve changes the angle of trunk work, which often makes it both more effective and more comfortable than the same thing flat on the floor.
Leg work over the barrel reaches the front of the hip with the pelvis supported, useful for backs that complain after sitting.
Everything happens at floor level with support underneath. For clients who are cautious about balance, that is the whole point.
Several small barrel exercises translate to a rolled towel or a cushion. It is the apparatus most likely to give you homework that actually works.
In a Private Session
The small barrel rarely leads a session. It appears when the body in front of me needs the benefits of spinal work in a smaller, safer dose, or when we need to prepare for something larger.
It is also where I often start with a client who is nervous. Lying on the floor with a supportive curve under the back is about as unintimidating as Pilates gets, and real work still happens.
As with everything here, the version you get is chosen after I have watched you move rather than before.
Common Questions
It supports the spine through gentle extension, flexion, rotation and side bending at floor level, and it is used for shoulder work, abdominal work and hip opening with the body well supported.
It is gentler and lower, which makes it more accessible. The work itself can still be demanding, particularly the abdominal and shoulder repertoire.
Some of it translates to a rolled towel or firm cushion. I will show you which exercises carry over and which genuinely need the apparatus.
The Full Apparatus
