The Apparatus · Baby Chair
★ First Session Free
The least known piece in the studio and one of the most useful. Seated, supported, spring-loaded work for shoulders, arms and the way you hold yourself up.
What It Actually Is
The Baby Chair, sometimes called the arm chair or baby arm chair, is a low seat with an angled back support and springs attached above the shoulders. You sit into it, with your spine supported, and work the arms and upper body against the springs.
It is the quietest piece of equipment in the classical system and it solves a problem almost everyone has: shoulders that have learned to shrug, necks that take over, and an upper back that has stopped participating.
Because the chair holds your spine, there is nowhere for the usual compensations to go. The shoulder has to do its own job.
What It Is For
The shoulder blade is trained to glide and set properly while the arm moves, which is the thing most shoulder problems actually need.
With the trunk supported, it becomes obvious when the neck is helping, and it becomes possible to stop it.
Sitting tall against a support, then working, teaches the position far better than being told to sit up straight.
Seated, supported, no getting down to the floor and no balance demand. It suits clients who find other apparatus intimidating.
Arm work against springs with a supported spine makes rib position and breathing unusually easy to feel.
For a nervous first session, ten minutes here often does more for confidence than anything else in the studio.
In a Private Session
The Baby Chair is a specialist. It does not run a whole session, but when shoulders, neck or upper back are the issue, nothing else in the studio isolates them as cleanly.
I use it often with clients who work at a desk, with anyone recovering around a shoulder once they have been cleared to load it, and with older clients who want upper body strength without floor work.
This is movement instruction, not medical care. If you are working around a shoulder injury or surgery, bring your physician guidance and we will build from there.
Common Questions
A low seat with an angled back support and springs mounted above the shoulders. It is used for seated arm, shoulder and upper back work with the spine supported.
Anyone with shoulder, neck or upper back concerns, desk workers, and clients who prefer seated work to floor work.
Yes. Everything on the Baby Chair happens seated, which is one of the reasons it is in the studio.
The Full Apparatus
